Constraints for the Martian Crustal Structure From Rayleigh Waves Ellipticity of Large Seismic Events

چکیده
Abstract For the first time, we measured ellipticity of direct Rayleigh waves at intermediate periods (15–35 s) on Mars using recordings three large seismic Martian events, including S1222a, largest event recorded by InSight mission. These measurements, together with P‐to‐s receiver functions and P‐wave reflection times, were utilized for performing a joint inversion local crustal structure landing site. Our results are compatible previously reported intra‐crustal discontinuities around 10 20 km depths, whereas preferred models show strong discontinuity ∼37 km, which is interpreted as crust‐mantle interface. Additionally, support presence shallow low‐velocity layer 2–3 thickness. Compared to nearby regions, lower wave velocities derived crust, suggesting higher porosity or alteration whole crust.

متن کاملcrustal velocity structure of kerman region from joint inversion of receiver functions and rayleigh waves group velocity dispersion
iran is situated in one of the world's seismic regions and the possibility of destructive earthquakes in most regions of the country has given great significance to recognition of iranian seismic nature from a seismic and seismotectonic standpoint. study of the crust and upper mantle velocity structure in the iranian plateau provides better understanding of its evolution and tectonic histo...
متن کاملUpper crustal azimuthal anisotropy across the contiguous U.S. determined by Rayleigh wave ellipticity
Constraints on upper crustal seismic anisotropy provide insight into the local stress orientation and structural fabric, but such constraints are scarce except in areas with dense recordings of local seismicity. We investigate directionally dependent Rayleigh wave ellipticity, or Rayleigh wave H/V (horizontal to vertical) amplitude ratios, between 8 and 20 s period across USArray to infer azimu...
متن کاملNucleation and early seismic propagation of small and large events in a crustal earthquake model
[1] Earthquake nucleation and early seismic propagation are studied in a two-dimensional strike-slip fault model with depth-variable properties. The fault is governed by the Dieterich-Ruina rate and state friction law. We use an efficient and rigorous numerical procedure for elastodynamic analysis of earthquake sequences on slowly loaded faults developed by Lapusta et al. [2000]. We find that f...
متن کاملDepths of Large Earthquakes Determined From Long-Period Rayleigh Waves
The depths and source mechanisms of nine large shallow earthquakes were determined from long-period (150 to 300 s) Rayleigh waves recorded by the Global Digital Seismograph Network (GDSN) and International Deployment of Accelerometers (IDA) networks. We inverted the data set of complex source spectra for a moment tensor (linear) or a double couple (nonlinear). By solving a least squares problem...
